This offensive-minded coach was hired to be Head Coach at a new, start from scratch, varsity program at McIntosh High School. Within four short years, coaching one of the most explosive shooting teams in the state, he was in the State Championship Game. He was asked to be Head Coach in four Georgia State Varsity All Star games compiling a record of three wins against a single defeat. In 2007, he was recognized by his peers as the US Lacrosse Coach of the Year for Georgia, and has since compiled well over 100 wins.

In 2009 he accepted the position of Director of Coaching and Head Coach for the Copperhead Lacrosse Club traveling out of Atlanta, winning nine Tournament Championships up and down the east coast in his two years and in January 2010 his team won their first U17 National Title. His teams from 2010/11 alone will send 20 or more players to top college programs.

He is the founder of www.laxcoachmike.com, conducting personal interviews with over 65 top NCAA Coaches on the latest techniques and philosophies for practice plans and drills with over 15,000 page views by lacrosse coaches each month. In addition he writes an exclusive popular column for lacrosse coaches on Laxpower.com viewed by thousands of lacrosse coaches across the country. In 2012 Mike accepted the Head Lacrosse Position for Auburn University.

“He is passionate about lacrosse, a student of the game, and a Former Coach of the Year. He has personal access to the best NCAA Coaches in the country. If you want someone who can take your program to the next level then why not consider a coach who’s been there and can get your program there? I’m not promoting Mike because he’s my good friend, I’m promoting him because that’s what I would do if I was in your situation.”

He led the Red Dragons to the NCAA Division III championship game in each of his first three seasons, including a national title in 2009. He also guided Cortland to the national semifinals in 2010 and the quarterfinals in 2011. In both of those seasons, the Red Dragons led Division III nationally in goals-against average.

Beville was selected as the 2009 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III National Coach of the Year as his team won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title and established a new school record for victories during a 19-2 campaign. Cortland won four NCAA tournament games, capped by a 9-7 victory over Gettysburg in the national title game in Foxborough, Mass.

This is our second podcast with this great coach. I have found him to be an interesting mix of ‘Old School’ as well as a coach focused on change and improvement, a mix we do not often see in our interviews. The bonus is that he is a really quick witted and funny guy to interview, all while I took eight pages of notes… I enjoy each and every podcast, but I really look forward to talking to Coach Beville, he is honest and forthcoming with a ton of specific ideas/drills, and I think the type of coach all players would love to play for…

In the full interview for the Premium Members, we get right into a specific dialog on footwork a term we hear a lot, but few coaches really explain their drills in detail, a unique 3V2 Clearing Drill, a number of new drills to enhance Riding (Since Cortland is the best Riding Team in DIII this was really cool), and then his explanation and breakdown on two of the successful rides utilized by Cortland.

In the Preview Sample, (for all of our Free Members), we feature a simple way to dramatically improve or enhance your 1V1 Drills, beginning with a slide, then developing into a 2V2… I loved it and cannot wait to try it! This improvement for 1V1 is also featured in the ‘Article’ Section of the site… with diagrams… listen here first, then read the article, love to get your comments below…

Many times, OK, well, almost always, when the great NCAA Coaches share their lacrosse drills with us, I get a little melancholy because they just make so much sense, often they are simple in configuration, they target a unique need in a special way, and might have seemed obvious to a coach with 35 years of lacrosse coaching…

But I had never thought of that specific way of reinforcing lacrosse fundamentals. Perhaps that is why they are NCAA Lacrosse Coaches preparing for the tournament, and I am writing articles for the internet…

Thus, this was the case with our second interview with one of my favorite coaches, Coach Beville from Cortland. Although he offered a litany of great lacrosse drills, this one stands out to me, for the reasons listed above.

Maybe like you, I have come full circle realizing the importance of one-on-one play both offensively as well as defensively in lacrosse practice. But especially if you are coaching by yourself – they seem to slow down practice, or we run them from the same location, or just get to be the same old thing. But the facts remain that in a 6V6 situation, usually nothing happens until somebody ‘beats’ somebody.

In this case, Coach Beville does an awesome job of creating a drill that is so game realistic, reinforces 1V1 play both offensively as well as defensively, integrates a slide to begin the drill focusing on controlled approach, footwork, breakdown when they get to the ball and positioning, as well shooting, and can quickly be adapted to 2V2, all at a very fast paced.

First Option, The Basic Drill, 1V1

You need to be logged in to see the rest of this post.
[ Login ] [ Register ]

Notre Dame 5V5 to 5V4 Slide and Recover w Detail Decisions

Although on first pass this drill appears to be a relatively basic 5V5 to 5V4 to 5V5 Lacrosse Transition Drill, in the interview with Coach Corrigan from Notre Dame we heard so much more. Perhaps it is a great example of the coaching detail that separates NCAA Coaches from the rest of us. OK, this article is about a drill, but the article is really about coaching and communicating fast on-field decisions in greater detail.

Coach Corrigan puts a unique perspective on the drills they select for practice. Where many coaches like me, or maybe like you, find a drill or see a drill we love and then run the drill. Corrigan suggests they find/identify a need, or area to be improved, and then the coaches design a drill to address the specific details needed to be better in that given scenario.

You need to be logged in to see the rest of this post.
[ Login ] [ Register ]

Kevin Corrigan is set to begin his 24th season on the Fighting Irish sideline in 2012. Since his arrival on campus in 1988, Corrigan has built Notre Dame into one of the premier men’s lacrosse programs in the nation. Few coaches in the country boast a résumé dotted with such team and individual success over an extended period of time.

Inheriting a program that had never earned a berth in the NCAA Championship, Corrigan has made the Irish a staple in the postseason. His tenure has been highlighted by two trips to the final four, including the program’s first-ever appearance in the national title game in 2010.

Corrigan steered the Irish to the national semifinals in 2001 in addition to quarterfinal trips in 1995, 2000, 2008 and 2011.

Notre Dame has garnered 16 invitations to the NCAA Championship since 1990, including a current run of six straight trips. The Fighting Irish have received a national seed and a first-round home game three times in the past four years.

Moving to the BIG EAST was not the only significant change for the Fighting Irish in 2010 as the team began play in its state-of-the-art facility, Arlotta Stadium. Playing in a top-level league and in the multi-million dollar stadium will help Corrigan keep the Notre Dame program among the nation’s best for years to come.

Corrigan has continued the tradition of academic success for the Irish men’s lacrosse program. Since first competing on the varsity level in 1981, every Irish lacrosse senior has graduated. Three players since 1997 have gained Academic All-America honors. A total of 13 Notre Dame student-athletes have been named Scholar All-Americans by the USILA during Corrigan’s tenure.

Corrigan has made the student-athlete experience special for the players that have competed for him at Notre Dame. The program has embarked on four foreign trips since `95. The treks have been to such countries as Ireland, England, Wales, Czech Republic and – most recently – Japan in the summer of 2010.

When not coaching, Corrigan still remains active by participating in various lacrosse clinics and camps and is a member of the South Bend Regional Sports Commission. He and his wife, Lis, reside in South Bend with their three children – Will, Sidney and Natale. Will is a freshman on the Fighting Irish roster in 2012.

In the full interview for the Premium Members we get some great philosophical insights, tips for Man Down, Practice Duration concepts, and a really interesting internal perspective on how NCAA Coaches apply detail to even the most basic drill. We have featured an example of this in our ‘Preview Sample’ for all Free members below,

Listen to Kevin Corrigan describe the drill in his own words, then check out the article in the Article Section of the site to read more and see the schematic of the drill.

In addition, if you are looking for camps for your players, they run some great camps on campus at Notre Dame, just go to the Notre Dame Mens Lacrosse site, or check out www.und.com/sports… They run some awesome team camps from Middle School through varsity that include film of a practice review with your coaches and the Notre Dame coaches, pretty cool…

First and foremost, I want to thank all of you so much for your support of the site. As you know it is our intent to keep 90% of the site free for registered members, and super content in the extensive library of podcast for our ‘Premium’ Member Family lacrosse coaching junkies… I am thankful…

I am so excited to share this with you. You all know what a huge believer I am in running at least an hour in each practice of transition drills. I get tons of emails, looking for ideas and drills, and new twists on drills for teams ranging from U11 to NCAA lacrosse teams to expedite the learning curve for lacrosse fundamentals. This philosophy has helped me, and helped improve practices for thousands of coaches who are members of our site. Simply put, it works.

This is the biggest most comprehensive eBook project I have worked on to date. I am humbled and thankful by the hundreds and hundreds of eBooks you have purchased in the past. If you loved the Customized Practice Plans, Changing Philosophies in Coaching Lacrosse, Coaching Youth Lacrosse, or the Specialty Lacrosse Drills eBook, you are really going to love this one.

At the point of this announcement and publishing this eBook, the drills in the eBook come from our 65 hrs of interviews with top NCAA Coaches on our site, www.laxcoachmike.com, many who run the same drills in many different configurations. Although we promised 25 of my favorite transition drills the eBook delivers so much more… You will immediately notice we have actually included 28 transition drills/articles, (I could not force myself to pick just 25) and many offer three to four variations on each drill. So there are well over 25 drills and more than an additional 30 plus variations. Total — 70 pages of good stuff… with 29 diagrams.

Disclaimer — Almost all of the drills are taken form my articles on the site, as well as other websites for which I write lacrosse coaching columns. Most are found scattered through websites and on line for free. The concept here was to compile the articles in one single heading of transition drills to help you, help your teams improve, in one single super-easy to navigate eBook.

However, not all of the web published drills had diagrams and I have included many more in the eBook. Please do not email me suggesting you saw the same drill on my site for a refund, this is where they originally came from in many cases, and I want you to know this all on the front side.

Why think about purchasing this eBook?

Although there may be a few traditional drills, I can assure you they come with new twists. The difference between this and other products out there is the timing. This is latest transition lacrosse drills and variations coming from the top coaches in the country. These are not the traditional drills you grew up with, but the latest transition trends from the best NCAA Lacrosse Programs in the country.

Next– the timing of technology, if you have an app for saving a pdf file on your smart phone, ipad or any other popular ‘Reader’ you can have this ebook saved to reference whenever you like. There are a lot of free apps out there to do this, we use “Bluefire Reader” try it out it is also FREE! We have taken the time to put in electronic bookmarks to immediately link you to any of the 28 lacrosse drills and their variations.

If you are running five to eight transition drills in each practice, this allows you to keep the drills different or slightly different for each practice. This is a critical point as we have learned from NCAA coaches that having different drills each day at practice we keep the players interested and engaged at every level. I promise, with a little more time in selection and planning on your part, you will find the players are having a blast and learning and improving at a much faster rate, than traditional fast break drills or 6V6 with a bunch of players standing around.

Coach Chris Ryan, Mercyhurst

As you know, I love drills that focus on transition, run at a really fast pace, and combine work on work on a number of fundamentals at the same time. One of the challenges of writing about NCAA Lacrosse Drills is that they often are predicated on 40-man rosters, and then need to be adapted to HS and Rec programs where the rosters are not nearly as large. The cool thing is you can also run this ¾ Field transition drill even if you only have one goalie.

In this great lacrosse drill from this great lacrosse coach, we meet or exceed all the criteria for rosters of any size. To help keep it simple I am going to break it down into three phases, although it is designed to run much faster.

You need to be logged in to see the rest of this post.
[ Login ] [ Register ]

Coach Ryan led the Lakers to the program’s first national championship in 2011, capping a 14-2 season. He holds a 123-31 career record, ranking him in the top-5 among active coaches in winning percentage. He is not only a great coach, but he is an awesome interview as you will hear. His perspective is relatively basic on fundamentals but delivered with his own special passion and humor.

In 2011, Ryan guided Hurst to 12 regular season victories, good enough to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. In the semifinals, the Lakers beat C.W. Post, 14-4. The win avenged a loss to Post from the regular season. In the finals, Mercyhurst defeated Adelphi 9-8 in Baltimore, Maryland, to capture the national title.

Coach Ryan played two years at Monroe Community College, where he was a two-time Academic All-America, team captain and was selected to play in the Junior College North-South game. After two years at MCC, Ryan moved to Randolph-Macon College where he was a two-time Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference defenseman and team captain in his senior year. Before assuming the head coaching duties after the 2000 season, Ryan served as Mercyhurst’s assistant coach, working primarily with the defense and serving as the recruiting coordinator.

This is our second interview with this great coach, as he walks us through the practice planning for this national championship team. Premium Members will love this as Coach also shares in the full podcast a number of drills including the ‘Indian Lacrosse Drill’, way to spice up his 6V6, the ‘Grenade Lacrosse Drill’ how and why he uses 7V7 Lacrosse Drills to energize his team, a dialog on their outstanding Man Up and Man Down philosophies, and a great drill for transition and defense, ‘The Counter Attack Drill’ which you can hear, by clicking the ‘Preview Sample’ below as well as read about it in our featured article section.

This preview of this great coach describing this drill in his own words is available for all of our Free Members, just log in and listen then check out the article.

For more on this great coach and the Mercyhurst lacrosse program visit, www.hurstathletics.com and click on the Men’s Lacrosse tab. Coming soon there will be more information on his Day Camps held in Erie PA as well. I hope you enjoy!!

Then Go ‘Swarm’

I am still energized following the recent podcast with a great Coach Greg Cannella from U Mass. Obviously, at the time of this podcast they are having an incredible season. We are finding that many NCAA Lacrosse coaches are running lacrosse drills where they put out cones to shorten or limit the area of the field where the players run the drill and can move the ball and speed to up the pace of play. Tighter spaces result in the need for shorter more accurate passes, quicker ball movement and closer defense. I have an article on Laxpower.com on how this works in a 3V2 lacrosse drill configuration. Coach Cannella referred to it as ‘Crushing the Field’.

As you know we are often taking the awesome NCAA drills and adapting them to youth or JV or Varsity teams. The NCAA coaches are designing drill with their 40 man rosters in mind, many times in a full field setting. Often they do not directly adapt to a team with a roster of 18 or 20 players, or even 25 to 30 man rosters when we only have five attackmen or only nine middies total at practice. I think this drill works great for a 40-man roster as well as a 25-man roster, and for youth as well as varsity teams.

5V5 Small Field

I loved this drill not only for its versatility, but also because we can use it to meet a number of issues that we all face as coaches.

1. The lacrosse drill is a quick fast-paced drill

2. The drill offers running in transition

3. The lacrosse drill can be great to use before the day of a game to ‘save’ legs while maximizing touches

4. The drill can be a great way to prepare for better teams as players need to react quicker, and defense is really forced to come out and play tighter

In this configuration of the field we have one cage in the crease, and the second goal moved up to the midfield line. Thus the restraining line now acts as the new ‘midfield’ line on a short field. In addition, we want to shorten the ‘width’ of the field by 10-15 yards on each side with cones. See below…

We have three attackmen, and three defensemen that must stay onside for each team, even in this short field configuration. We have two middies for each team. So we have five offensive and five defensive players in the lacrosse drill. The extra middies and/or shorties are lined up outside the field at the restraining line — acting as the new midfield line. Are you confused yet? Hang in there.

And we play – following a shot, or goal or save the two middies that had been on defense, are breaking down the field to be the new offensive middies. The two middies that had been on defense are now out of the drill, and they run up to join the lines of shorties at the ‘midfield’ line. The goalie yells clear, two new middies from the lines outside the field at midfield join the drill as defensive middies running to the other end to play defense.

The two middies that had been on defense are now offense, and catch the pass from the goalie to clear to the other end and we play 5V5 at that end to a quick shot. To make it easier to understand, consider that the middies play defense first, then offense, then go and get in line for their next rotation. Have you got it??

In the drawing below, assume the ‘Red team’ played offense to a shot, those two middies are off and two new ‘Red’ Middies join the drill as defensive players first, from the lines outside the ‘new midfield’ line.

If your roster is smaller, you might try it with two attack and two close D, turning the same drill into 4V4 on the short field.

Variation “Swarm”

Coach Cannella also offered another drill they refer to as the ‘Swarm Drill.’ At U Mass they run this drill similar to a 10V10 full field scrimmage, however, at one minute intervals, they blow the whistle and roll a ball out anywhere on the full field, the players adapt, ‘swarm’ to ground ball and play. And at the next one minute mark the coaches blow the whistle, roll a ball to another location and the swarm initiates and we play from there.

They might change middies or attack or defense on a whistle then roll the ball to accommodate getting different players involved in the drill.

For those of us with smaller rosters, we can combine these two drills. In the first option, leave the middies on the field, without throwing the outlet to new players. We are just going to let the middies stay and play. And then roll out a ball perhaps yell ‘swarm’ let them find it, gain possession, and play from there. We tried this with two or three ground balls per group and then changed out players, especially middies. The kids loved it.

As an additional option to the drill, we let the kids go up and down with the outlet passes, and then roll out a ball perhaps yell ‘swarm’ let them find it, gain possession, and play from there.

Please go to the ‘Interview’ section of the site, and you can listen (all free members) to Coach Cannella describe the two drills in his own words via the ‘Preview Sample.’

Cannella has brought his Minutemen to seven NCAA Tournaments, winning seven tournament games since 1997, claiming six New England championships including 2006, won the 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2009 ECAC Lacrosse titles. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in 2009, joining his selections in 2009, 2004, 2002, and 2001 and New England Coach of the Year four times including the last two seasons. He was named the 2006 USILA National Coach of the Year after leading UMass to its first-ever lacrosse NCAA Championship game.

At the time of this podcast they are having an incredible season. I was so happy that Coach Cannella took the time to get into real detail on their unique practice structure at U Mass, and a number of great and frankly pretty different perspective on drills. He is a passionate coach that has an awesome perspective including not so much focusing on plays, but running what they want to run out of their different sets.

The specific skeleton for his practice plan is really different than most of the sixty plus coaches we had interviewed at the time of the podcast. It is a mixture of speed transition drills, then kind of settled, then back to fast paced drills then back to teaching etc. You can hear all the details in the full podcast for Premium Members including the skeleton work on clears, to live riding and clearing (including their ‘open set’ clear,) to 1V1 building to 3V3 out of their sets, to transition to full field then back to 6V6… and closes with a detailed dialog on their success on man up with is way above the national statistics.

We also got a great drill he refers to ‘Crushing the Field, Short Field 5V5,’ you are going to love it, and we also combined it with their ‘Swarm Drill’ which we preview in the ‘Preview Sample’ below which available to all of our free members, click and listen to Coach Cannella describe this cool drill in his own words. It only takes a few minutes so please take advantage of his experience and this drill that can do so much in so many ways. This technique he uses to ‘Crush the Field’ build more speed in practice and more touches. For more on this please check out the article in the ‘Article Section’ of the site.
