Coach Mike with Shades

I am simply a Lacrosse Coach just like you, albeit maybe a little older. I am old. Like you, I have been truly committed to giving back to the game we love, and the game that has given all of us so much. Like you I have worked with teams with kids under the age of twelve, Youth Programs, Club Programs HS Varsity Programs, JV Programs, All Star Games and Select Travel Teams.

Recognized by peer coaches…

US Lacrosse Coach of the Year – Georgia, 2007
SELC DI Coach of the Year, 2013

Like you, I have dealt with the changing nature of Kids, Parents, Boosters and School Administrators. I have been recruited to coach in prestigious programs, and I have also been fired. I have had the fortunate experience to both play and coach in State Championship Games, in front of thousands as well as play and coach in front of 17 parents and friends in 36 degree weather.

Like you, I have been blessed to play for awesome Coaches whose words and messages are with me every day. I have also been coached by coaches at every level who were not nearly as good.

I have attended and learned so much at all the National Conferences both at the High School level as well as the IMLCA and the common denominator in our sport is that coaches will truly help each other. And thus the introduction of our site, where “Coaches are getting better…together.”

Mike’s background, High School at Worthington HS (74) in Columbus Ohio, Captain, on a Midwest Championship team, selected as All Midwest, and blessed and honored to play under legendary High School Coach, John Galipault.

As a defenseman, Muetzel was recruited and played NCAA Lacrosse at both Ohio Wesleyan as well as Bowling Green State University.

Muetzel re-entered coaching HS Club Lacrosse in Peachtree City in 2002 as an Assistant Coach. (13 & Under). He then coached on the first NGLL Club HS Tournament Championship Team in Spring of 2003. In 2004, Coach Mike accepted the position of Head Coach of the PTC HS Club Team in the NGLL, finishing with most wins of any Non-Varsity program in the State of Georgia.

In 2005 Muetzel accepted the Varsity Head Coaching Position at McIntosh High School (Community Coach), a new varsity program. The Chiefs played in the State Playoffs in just their third year of existence, and in four short years the new program competed in the State Championship, losing in Double OT to the respected long-standing program at Lovett. In 2007 Muetzel was voted by his peers and recognized with the US Lacrosse Coach of the Year Award for Georgia. Two weeks following the Championship Game, McIntosh decided to move away from a Lay Head Coach and dismissed Muetzel.

Muetzel continues to work with young players each year, U13 PTC Fall Rec Program, and was named Head Coach of Team Georgia U15 for the summer of 2008. Muetzel has been recognized by peers and organizers to perform as Head Coach in four different Georgia High School Varsity All Star Classic events with an All-Star Game Record of 3-1.

In 2009 Muetzel began coaching the Atlanta Copperheads Travel Elite Team. This team advanced to the Dicks National Championship Finals U17 in 2009, and won the Dick’s National Championship U17 in 2010.

In a little less than four years as a Head Coach/Director of Coaching the Copperheads have won fourteen travel tournament championships across the country including the U17 National Championship… and all the credit does not go to me, but to the top coaches that have been so willing to share ways to put the kids in a position to be successful.

In 2010 the site www.laxcoachmike.com, will have received over 250,000 page views from lacrosse coaches taking advantage of the many tools to help your kids, and our site has grown significantly since then… pretty humbling actually,

In 2011, Coach Mike began writing a popular column with coaching tips and drills for Laxpower.com

In 2012 Muetzel accepted the Head Coach position at Auburn, playing in the prominent SELC Conference of the MCLA. In the first year of re-building a culture the team went 4-6, in the second year with a strong recruiting class the team went to 9-4, and Muetzel received SELC DI Coach of the Year as voted by his peers,
