Steve Beville begins his sixth season as Cortland’s men’s lacrosse head coach in 2012. He led the Red Dragons to the NCAA Division III championship game in each of his first three seasons, including a national title in 2009. He also guided Cortland to the national semifinals in 2010 and the quarterfinals in 2011. In both of those seasons, the Red Dragons led Division III nationally in goals-against average.
Beville was selected as the 2009 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III National Coach of the Year as his team won the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title and established a new school record for victories during a 19-2 campaign. Cortland won four NCAA tournament games, capped by a 9-7 victory over Gettysburg in the national title game in Foxborough, Mass.
This is our second podcast with this great coach. I have found him to be an interesting mix of ‘Old School’ as well as a coach focused on change and improvement, a mix we do not often see in our interviews. The bonus is that he is a really quick witted and funny guy to interview, all while I took eight pages of notes… I enjoy each and every podcast, but I really look forward to talking to Coach Beville, he is honest and forthcoming with a ton of specific ideas/drills, and I think the type of coach all players would love to play for…
In the full interview for the Premium Members, we get right into a specific dialog on footwork a term we hear a lot, but few coaches really explain their drills in detail, a unique 3V2 Clearing Drill, a number of new drills to enhance Riding (Since Cortland is the best Riding Team in DIII this was really cool), and then his explanation and breakdown on two of the successful rides utilized by Cortland.
