Maybe you are like me; every time you see an offensive lacrosse player set a pick you hold your breath a little bit waiting for the moving pick call. Or possibly, you have one of those bigger defensive players, playing with a pole that sees every pick as an opportunity to run over the offensive pick guy and blow him into the bleachers, and again out comes the flag.

I must respectively submit that perhaps the issues are not with the players, but with us the coaches. Like you, I have been coaching a long time and yet spend very little time in practice working specifically on details or fundamentals with pick play, yet I expect the players to perform like some NCAA Team. So who is the fool? In fact, I have pretty much, or had pretty much eliminated ‘on ball’ picks, especially at ‘X’ or around the cage, from our offensive arsenal because we just did not do it well.

Which brings me to this season. Does anybody else notice resurgence in offensive pick play in all of the NCAA games we watch on television?

Thoughts on a pick that comes off a teammate backpedaling out of a play after he cuts? This stops the chance of a moving screen because your coming off his back, right? Example, slow break after moving the ball to “X” the first mid in the play cuts back post “backpedals” out and second mid cuts off the backpedaling player. Also you could use this in fast break “L” formation. Point attack backpedals down and the lower attack comes off the player backpedaling, intimately they switch spots allowing for a quick catch and shoot. Thoughts, look forward to hearing your input.

It is a really interesting thought, and I appreciate the comment, but as a long time referree, I am thinking a moving pick is a moving pick, regardless of front or back… but I am not absolutely certain, welcome thoughts from other coaches,

    Thanks, Coach Mike

Front or back, if your player is moving and he runs into an opposing player more than 5 yards off the ball it is interference and a turnover.
